Safety reminders for winter driving

The winter time is almost always the most dangerous time of year for drivers. The roads are slippery, visibility can be diminished, and it seems as if other drivers don’t know what they’re doing. There are definitely some things to keep in mind when taking your car out during the winter, so let’s go over a few simple safety reminders.

How to drive safely in the winter

Take it slow

This sounds obvious, but going slow is the best way to ensure your safety and the safety of others around you. When the roads are snowy or icy, go 5 to 10 miles per hour under the speed limit. This will increase your reaction time and make it easier for you to brake. Trying to come to a stop on a slippery surface is very difficult at higher speeds.

Keep your headlights (and fog lights) on

Even during the daytime, you should keep your lights on. Yes, headlights can help you see the road better, but more importantly, they let other drivers know where you are more easily. Winter weather can strike front view of van driving in snowunexpectedly, so it’s best to be prepared. Keep your lights on and you will be as visible as possible to the motorists and pedestrians in the snow.

Watch your surroundings

Even if you take it slow and keep your lights bright, other drivers might not. Keep an extra eye out for other motorists and expect the unexpected. Keep your head on a swivel and make sure you know who is behind you, in front of you, and to the sides of you. These are simple tips that are always relevant, but even more so in the winter months. Stay safe out on the roads!
