Safety tips for driving during winter

1. Check the weather

If you’re about to embark on any sort of lengthy trip, we highly recommend checking the weather prior to your departure. You don’t want to end up stuck in a blizzard when you’re hours from home, and you definitely don’t want to be surprised by bad conditions, so checking the weather before hitting the road is a great way to preapre you for what’s to come.

2. Use caution

Although this tip is obvious, it bears repeating. You’ll want to use extreme caution when on the road in winter, especially if weather conditions are less than ideal. If there is any sort of snow or ice on the pavement, make sure to accelerate and decelerate extremely slowly and leave extra space between you and the car in front of you.

3. Don’t crowd snow plows

Snow plows move very slowly, and they often stop, overlap lanes, and make wide turns, so we recommend giving plows plenty of space on the road. They also have been known to “throw” snow, so remaining a safe distance away from plows will help avoid driving into blinding snow clouds.
