The team first moved to Cleveland from Grand Rapids Michigan and was initially named the Cleveland Lake Shores. They were also only a minor league club during that time. Then in 1901, when the American League broke with the National Agreement, declaring itself a major league, the team was renamed again to the Cleveland Bluebirds. Then the team was renamed again to the Naps after their star player Napoleon “Nap” Lajoie in 1901. Then in 1912 the team name was changed to the Molly Maguires. After the highly respected and admired coal miners who were trying to establish a union.
