How to avoid distracted driving

It has always been a problem, but only in recent years has distracted driving become such an epidemic. Smartphones have become a staple in our lives and they do so many good things. They also are incredibly distracting. But there are more distractions than phones. Check out some ways you can avoid those and stay as safe as possible behind the wheel.

3 things you can do to avoid distracted driving

1.) Put your phone away

This one is obvious, but so few people do it. Keep your phone on silent and put it in the glovebox, back seat, or even the trunk if you have to. Phone use is the leading cause of distracted-driving-related accidents. Even a hands-free phone conversation can be distracting. Keep it away until you get to your destination.

2.) Limit your passenger count

Even if your crossover SUV can hold seven people, don’t pack it full unless you have to. The more people in your vehicle, the more talking and distracting that goes on. Obviously, carpooling is great, but not if it’s going to be a safety concern. Studies have shown that vehicles with multiple passengers are more likely to be involved in an accident.

3.) Do your multitasking prior to driving

If you have some texts to respond to, tweets to like, or a playlist to play, get that taken care of before you start driving. We all like to listen to our own music in the car. Just have it picked out before you go so you don’t feel tempted to find a new song during your drive. These are some simple tips, but if you do follow them right, you will be far less likely to get into an accident due to distracted driving.
