Local Historical Landmarks in the City of Dayton

Here at Matt Castrucci Nissan we try to provide you with information about many different aspects of our home town. We all know that Dayton is a city with a very rich and diverse history. However, we often forget that we can revisit our community’s history through some of the historical landmarks that can be found throughout the city. In this post we will explore some of our favorite local historical landmarks in the city of Dayton.

Wright Cycle Company Shop: One of the things that makes Dayton such a unique place is the fact that their have been so many famous inventors who have lived there throughout history. That includes the famous Aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright. The brothers managed the Wright Cycle Company shop from 1895 until 1897. This location holds extra significance because it was actually the location where some of the first ever flight tests took place. When guests visit the Wright Cycle Company Shop today they can view antique bicycles and other machinery used on their historic invention.

Hawthorn Hill: There is another famous Wright Brothers historical spot here in Dayton, Hawthorn Hill. It is a Georgian-style mansion that was built by the Wright Brothers and their sister. They made an agreement that all three of them would spend the rest of their lives living their after it was built, and that none of them would ever get married. However, Orville was the only sibling to go through with the pledge.

Patterson Homestead: This is a Federal-style farmhouse that belonged to the famous Colonel Robert Patterson at one time. The home was donated to the city of Dayton back in 1953 by Robert’s son Frank. Patterson was a Revolutionary War Veteran and was the founder of Lexington Kentucky. His grand children also lived in the Patterson Homestead as well. So this house gives you a rare and unique look into what life was like between the years 1804 until 1904 when the Patterson’s were occupying it.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum: This cemetery was constructed way back in 1843. It covers over 200-acres and is one of the largest garden style cemeteries in the entire country. Many of Dayton’s most famous historical figures have been laid to rest at this location. Some of them include: Col. Edward Deeds, Wilbur and Orville Wright, and the Patterson family. Woodland Cemetery has over 3,000 trees and 100,000 monuments in all. There is also a beautiful church on the property that features Tiffany windows.

We hope that you’ll take some time to explore some of these significant historical places that are right here in our own community. Also, keep Matt Castrucci Dayton OH Nissan in mind the next time that you are in the market for a different new or used vehicle or repairs.
