Does Nissan own Infiniti?

At Matt Castrucci Nissan, our passion is selling and servicing cars, and we’re great at it. But manufacturing cars — now that’s a complicated game. One of the questions people ask us a lot is “Does Nissan own Infiniti?” The answer is yes. Infiniti is the luxury vehicle division of Nissan. And that’s a great starting point for discussion.

Does Nissan own Infiniti?

Yep. Infiniti is the luxury division of Nissan. It was started in 1989. While Infiniti vehicles often have more bells and whistles (and higher price tags), we prefer the offerings from Nissan. If you think about it, Infiniti doesn’t make amazing sports cars like the GT-R, or affordable electric cars like the Leaf, or tough pickup trucks like the Titan XD. Nissan covers all the bases.

Does Nissan own any other car companies?

Sure. Nissan recently bought one-third of Mitsubishi Motors, another familiar vehicle brand. Those vehicles aren’t as popular as Nissan in the United States, but they’re a big hit in other parts of the world. Nissan hopes to improve on the quality and success of that brand here and abroad.

Then who owns Nissan?

The next question we usually get is “If Nissan owns those brands … who owns Nissan?” Nissan isn’t really owned by any other company, but it is half of a partnership with a car manufacturer in France called Renault. The Renault-Nissan Alliance is the sixth-largest car company in the world and is the leading maker of plug-in electric vehicles, like the Leaf.

So Nissan vehicles are made in Japan or France?

Nope. If you own a Nissan vehicle made in the last several decades, it was probably made here in the US of A. The most-popular Nissan vehicles, like the Altima, Maxima, Leaf, Pathfinder, Rogue and more are made in Smyrna, Tennessee. That’s also where all of the Nissan electric vehicle batteries are made, at the largest (and so far, only) automotive lithium-ion battery plant in the United States.
