5 things to do before Daylight Savings Time

The crisp smell of autumn is in the air and did the season ever come quick. Not only does fall mark the back-to-school season and cool weather, but it’s also the end of Daylight Savings Time. Mark your calendar because Daylight Savings Time falls on Sunday, November 1 this year. Aside from setting your clock back one hour the day of, here are 5 things to do before Daylight Savings Time.

Change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
This is a major one. It’s easy to forget about these important safety features in our homes, but Daylight Savings Time provides a helpful reminder. Be sure to replace batteries and conduct a test just to double to make sure everything is working right.

Check your emergency kit
Go through and throw out all the expired products inside and replenish with new ones. Don’t have a first aid kit? Start one and while you’re at it, make one for your car too! It’s quick, easy to make and is a vital resource to have.

5 things to do before Daylight Savings TimeTake stock of your medicine cabinet and pantry
There are also those items we say we’ll eat, but never do in time. Check out the pantry and medicine cabinet for all the items that are expired or just aren’t getting eaten. Have some canned good that are still good to eat, but no one in your house will eat it? Save those goods for fall food drives, or bring to a homeless shelter.

Wash your pillows and flip your mattress
You read that right. It’s good practice to flip your mattress every 6 months and to wash your pillows routinely. Have you owned your pillow for longer than two years? Now’s a great time to replace it.

Replace or clean filters in your home
Dust bunnies hang out in the strangest places, including your heating and air-conditioning units. Now’s a great time to get those filters looking new again. While you’re at it, why not replace the vacuum filter too?
